Are Jørgensen is a Senior Principal Engineer responsible for DNV's development of rules and guidance regarding autonomous and remotely operated ships.
DNV is one of the leading class societies and already in 2018 published a comprehensive guide for autonomous vessels and related autonomy and remote-control systems (DNVGL-CG-0264) with Are Jørgensen as the lead author.
DNV's guideline on autonomy is being used in some of the most prestigious autonomy projects and serves as a base for the continued development of detailed requirements and guidelines.
As a class society and 3rd-party verifier DNV is focusing on the verification needed to ensure that that the autonomous ships and the individual automation systems results in ship operations that are at least as safe as the operation of conventional ships.
Are Jørgensen has a background in software development and quality assurance of cyber physical systems from a number of industries, and believes that the maritime industry have something to learn from other industries where the digitalization already have led to higher maturity levels regarding the utilization, creation and management of software.
